How does spaying and neutering our cats and dogs save the animals? According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 to 7 million animals enter animal shelters/rescues nationwide every year. Of these animals, approximately 3 to 4 million are euthanized. Most of the animals euthanized had their lives ended because there was no room left for them in the shelters and no one to adopt them. So you ask, why spay or neuter your pet? Isn’t that enough reason? Well, we know by past experience that it is not enough reason for many pet owners. So let us give you a few more reasons that can affect each and every cat or dog you own in your lifetime.

One obvious health benefit is to our female pets, preventing them from having to go through pregnancy and all the potential pregnancy complications. The incredible physical stress that our female pets go through during pregnancy and birth is eliminated. Spaying female pets also eliminates the following: spotting during heat period; false pregnancies; mammary tumors; uterine infections; tumors of the ovaries or uterus; and stress, leading to increased susceptibility to disease.

In female dogs, heat periods occur twice a year and last about 3 weeks each time. Female cats may come into heat every 2-3 weeks. During heat, both dogs and cats will be more irritable and nervous than usual, and may even become aggressive and damage furniture or attack strangers. Female cats may howl and rub excessively.

Male dogs being neutered will benefit even more than females. It is true; less testosterone does equal less trouble. An unneutered male can detect a female in heat even miles away. Neutering decreases roaming by 90%. Responding to the overwhelming urge to reproduce, he may often become nervous and irritable, perhaps picking fights with other dogs or become lethargic, less responsive to his owner, stop eating or act ill or depressed. Neutering male pets may reduce or eliminate the following behaviors: territoriality and aggression, including urinating to mark territory and fighting to defend it; wandering, escaping and automobile injuries; humping behavior; prostate enlargement; prostrate tumors and infections; tumors of the testicles, penis and anal area; hernia; and stress leading to increased susceptibility to disease.

So, besides the health of your animals, the saving of millions of animals, the improvement to our community as a whole, please also remember that neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human companions/families. Isn’t that one of the main reason we all love our cats and dogs? We love them and we love that they love us back!

TODAY is Purr Photography's 3rd Annual "Photos with Santa" Event at Roselle Animal Hospital from 11:00am -4:00pm. Santa is making a special trip in from the North Pole so he can be included in your holiday photos.

This will be a professional photo shoot, the digital prints will be emailed to you after the event. You can use the photos to make your holiday cards, or have them printed at a local photo finisher.

This event benefits the animals of Almost Home Foundation. The fee for the event is a donation to Almost Home. Any size donation is appreciated.

Santa loves pets, babies, entire families too! Please come have your photos taken with Santa... you will be helping homeless pets at the same time.

Looking for a way that YOU can help animals? We have an opening for a Medical Coordinator. Here's what it entails:

Someone who is available during days/evenings to take calls and schedule our adult foster dogs for their medical needs. Prefer someone who does not work or works part time and can handle the calls. Must be professional in dealing with people and our vets. Computer experience is helpful as you will be updating our medical database also.

People often say they’ll adopt the cat that chooses them. They want the one that comes right up to them with a big hello!

But what about the cats who aren’t brave enough to make the first move? They’re the ones who sit in the back of their cage or hide under the blankets.

Nobody gives these cats a second look. They get passed by week after week, watching the friendlier, more confident cats find homes.

Some of them just have a shy streak. Others are extremely friendly in the home environment, but are terrified when placed in a cage at a busy pet store.

These special cats need somebody who sees with their heart instead of their eyes. We hope you fall in love with one of these faces!

VISIT US AT PALATINE STREETFEST!! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TOO!

Almost Home Foundation will again be represented at the Palatine StreetFest event, which is planned for the weekend of August 26 through 28.This will be our fourth year and, again, NO dogs are allowed at this event; however, it is a great marketing venue and all non-profit organizations equally split the proceeds from the sales of children’s rides.

All non-profits receive free advertising and a site on the gazebo courtyard, in exchange for having their booths in operation during required hours and sharing the operation of a child game with its surrounding non-profit neighbor.

I will be at our booth for the entire 2-day event, but I need volunteers to assist:

SATURDAY: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (I do have one person signed-up );

2:00 – 5:00 p.m.,

5:00 – 8:00 p.m.;

SUNDAY: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.;

2:00 – 5:00 p.m.;

5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (includes assisting with taking-down booth).

Almost Home Foundation needs to expand thier foster pool! Lots of dogs that come through would do best as only pets....these dogs end up alone in the kennel and get depressed, which doesn't help them get adopted. If you don't have a dog...would you consider fostering one of these guys? If you do have a dog, how about a temporary play mate? It's not easy, but its extreamly rewarding and your help is desprately needed.

Yeah!!! We are starting the process of adding videos for our rescue animals. Here is the scoop:

Due to the increase of rescues adding videos to Pet Point they are getting overwhelmed. Because of this, Pet Point has asked that all rescues only add videos via YouTube and not directly via Pet Point any longer. And AHF's Director of Computer Services, Terri SV, has also requested that no one adds videos directly via Pet Point any longer as she wants to ensure the quality of the videos that we have on our web site.

I have therefore set up several YouTube channel for Almost Home Foundation. For dogs it is: ahfdogvideos

Please email all to: videos@almosthomefoundation.org . This is an email forwarder that will go directly to the person (s) uploading the videos to YouTube and approving them to be used on our web site.

And please understand that 1) it will take whomever is doing it a bit of time to process each video; 2) all videos will need to be approved for quality and appropriateness; and as always 3) same rule as with pictures - no kids in the videos.

I think this is exciting news and hope that it helps our animals be adopted :-)

Digital Stories for Rescue Animals

I have been taking a social networking/media class and learning how to create digital stories and slide shows. I have found that it is a fun way to show off Almost Home Foundation's rescue animals.

Sadie Lee, a small Apricot poodle ran out of her temporary foster home last night. This is a puppy mill dog so she is probably scared and won’t go to anyone.

Frost Animal Club

The Frost Animal Club, comprised of seventh and eighth grade animal lovers, gathered quite a lot of donations for the Almost Home Foundation. The club held a donation drive for homeless animal shelters at Robert Frost Junior High a few months ago. They passed out flyers at school, made posters, and asked friends and family to donate anything they had around the house such as newspapers, old towels, blankets, paper towels and much more. Impressively, they were able to fill an entire classroom with donations. Part of these donations went to the Almost Home Foundation as well as three other shelters in the area. The Animal Club members should be very proud of their hard work and dedication for such an amazing cause; the dogs and cats are very appreciative!

Lost Dog: Daisy

Our female rat terrier/beagle mix full-grown dog ran out of our yard. She responds to "Daisy". She is mainly black with white and tan on her belly and paws and face. She has a cropped tail and has a blue/purple collar. She has been missing since 2/18/11 (approx. 2 p.m.). 2/20/2011.

Lost 2/18/2011 We live near Randall Road and Illinois Avenue in Aurora, IL. She got out of our gate just a few blocks from there. She was seen near Indian Trail and Nantucket around 5 p.m. that same day.

Joshua-Paul Angell has been an Activist in the areas of Animal Rescue, Animal Welfare, Animal Rights , GLBT RIGHTS and Politics since 1999. He is the host of a Syndicated Radio Show, The Joshua-Paul Show on WBTR WorldWide Radio which airs weekly at 9:30 pm CST streaming online and via various affiliates on terrestrial radio. He runs his show completely to raise funding for the charity of his choice, a ChicagoLand based Animal Rescue, Almost Home Foundation. As an avid Animal Rights Activist and Rescuer, all of the profits that he generates from his work go directly to this non-profit rescue. He is a fashion designer that has worked with several celebrities; such as Betty Buckley, Natalie Portman and Gloria Loring.
